【Opening】From Mountains to Oceans: Making Conservation Accessible
Host Xixi:
"From mountains to oceans, making conservation accessible. Welcome to our special edition podcast. Today, we’re honored to have Huang Yunfei—a nature-inspired designer, board member of the Mangrove Conservation Foundation, and coordinator of the Bird Window Collision Prevention Network in Shenzhen. Yunfei, please introduce yourself briefly."
Huang Yunfei:
"Hello everyone! I’m Yunfei, an artist volunteer at Guardians of the Wild, founder of Flutterwing, and a lifelong birdwatcher. My mission is to bridge ecological conservation and public awareness through creative products."
【Nature Awakening】A Birdwatcher’s Journey Begins in Elementary School
Host:
"What sparked your passion for birds?"
Yunfei:
"In fifth grade, I noticed green birds dancing outside my window every afternoon. Adults used folk names until a school birdwatching event revealed their scientific identities: Zosterops japonicus (Dark-eyed Junco), Pycnonotus jocosus (Red-whiskered Bulbul), and Nycticorax nycticorax (Black-crowned Night Heron). That moment of clarity hooked me for life."

【Unforgettable Moments】‘The Elusive Silver Pheasant’
Host:
"Any unforgettable birding experiences?"
Yunfei:
"Searching for Silver Pheasants in Guangxi’s Yunmeng Mountains—we hiked all day without success, only to spot a pair crossing the road as we left. Another time in Beijing’s Botanical Garden, I shivered for hours in sub-zero temperatures before finding a Winter Wren hopping by a bridge. Birding teaches patience and humility."
【From Witness to Advocate】Building the Bird Window Collision Prevention Network
Host:
"How did you join this initiative?"
Yunfei:
"Rescuing a window-struck bird as a teenager planted the seed. In 2021, I became Shenzhen’s coordinator. Our volunteers grew from 30 to 400—students, nurses, retirees united by purpose. An architect redesigned glass facades; others craft collision-prevention decals. Every skill matters in citizen science."
【Art as Advocacy】When Keychains Become Field Guides
Host:
"How does art fuel conservation?"
Yunfei:
"My college-era heron keychain led friends to spot real herons. Our Night Heron plush crowdfunded rescue programs. Recently, a customer sent a blurry kingfisher photo asking, ‘Is this YOUR bird?’ That connection is why I create."
【Design Challenges】Translating Sketches into Reality
Host:
"What hurdles exist in product design?"
Yunfei:
"Early on, I thought designs could go straight to production. Reality taught me about embroidery seam spacing, metal pin shrinkage, and inventory systems. Now I collaborate with factories—learning why a 1cm design won’t stitch. Visiting workshops transformed how I balance creativity and feasibility."

【Future Vision】AR Storytelling for Global Audiences
Yunfei:
"We’re developing AR-enabled bookmarks—scan to watch chicks hatch. Future plans include global crowdfunding to share China’s migratory stories. Conservation transcends borders; creativity is our universal language."
【Action Guide】Everyday Conservation Steps
Yunfei:
1️⃣ Report collisions via the Bird Window Collision Prevention Network mini-program.
2️⃣ Apply window decals (5x5cm spacing, under $1.5/sheet).
3️⃣ Contact professionals for injured birds—never take them home.
True conservation lives in daily acts of care.
